TAKAI KNOW-HOW: BETWEEN INNOVATION AND TRADITION

In Japanese, Takai means: "Precious", "Rare"

Technological innovation for selecting the best steels, ergonomic design with Computer Aided Design, a digital modeling software of the hairdresser's hand, and the manufacturing of Takai scissors on computer-controlled machines.

Respect for tradition in sharpening and polishing, entirely done by hand by the Takai master sharpeners in Japan. The ancestral and meticulous technique, the Hamaguri convex sharpening, is a succession of 7 sharpening angles for an extreme edge combined with great cutting softness, the specialty of Takai.

1) COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN

This software reproduces the digitized hand in 3 dimensions to simulate the specific constraints acting on the muscles and tendons.

This program allows for the creation of innovative scissor designs in accordance with the technical gestures of hairdressers for essential work ergonomics.

2) THE STEELS

The Japanese steels are renowned for their quality: an ancestral reputation due to the crafting of the famous katanas, swords for the Samurai whose edge was extreme and soft.

Takai Technology works closely with the steel giant Nippon Steel to benefit from the most advanced alloys.

The unit of measurement for steel hardness is the Rockwell degree (HRC). It determines the resistance of the steel.

This measurement is important for the lifespan of the edge of the Takai Japanese scissors. But be careful, a Rockwell degree should not be too low, as the steel would be too soft and would result in a poor-quality blade, nor too high at the risk of having a tool that would break at the slightest fall.

The average for classic scissors is 50 Rockwell degrees.
Takai Technology scissors have a Rockwell degree ranging from 59 to 65.

Takai Technology uses 4 categories of steel for its models:

3) BLADE MACHINING

The Takai scissors have concave blades. They are hollowed out on the inside.

The advantages are:

  • A perfect crossing of the blades.
  • Greater cutting softness, as the friction of the blades is reduced by 1 or 2 tenths of a millimeter.
  • Hair does not slip.
  • Effective slicing techniques regardless of the opening of the blades.

4) HAMAGURI SHARPENING

If the quality of the steel is imperative in the making of a pair of Takai hairdressing scissors, the art of sharpening is another essential step.

It is the most delicate operation in the manufacturing process of Takai scissors.

The convex sharpening "Hamaguri" of Takai Technology is a succession of 7 very precise sharpening angles.

The Hamaguri is a very meticulous sharpening technique that requires many years of experience.

It is a highly effective technique since the rounding of the blade is perfect up to the edge. Thus, the sharpness of the blade is an integral part of the mass of the blade for greater rigidity.

Concave blades combined with Hamaguri convex sharpening greatly enhance cutting performance: the edge lasts longer and hair ejection is facilitated.

At Takai, there is another type of sharpening, which we have called, the Miracle Slit sharpening. It only exists on the Summum model.
It is a sharpening Hamaguri with micro slits on the tips of the blades.

The advantages are:

  • In straight cutting, the Miracle Slit allows cutting very thick strands, the micro slits on the tip holding the hair.
  • In thinning-sliding, the Miracle Slit works impeccably, like a model with Hamaguri convex sharpening.
  • Softness and flexibility of cutting for effective slicing.
  • Lifespan of the sharpening increased.
